SATAM Tree appraisal Methods

South African Tree Appraisal Method (SATAM)

The South African Tree Appraisal Method (SATAM) is more applicable to trees found in urban areas, or trees that have very little commercial value, for example timber, citrus or soft fruit tree species.

SATAM is a formulae that will determine the monetary values of trees through a step-by-step process of looking at the situation that includes an investigation of the tree (species / origin), data collection about the tree (condition appraisal) and its position in the landscape and environment (environmental contribution and amenity appraisal), to derive a reasonable conclusion and recommendation.

As a competent tree appraiser I have a broad background knowledge in plant and especially tree biology, e.g. tree structure, maintenance, and health of trees.

By being assigned a monetary value, trees can take their rightful place within the environment in planning calculations, maintenance, and budgeting alongside other assets of known value.  Trees are often seen as villains when two opposite parties, for example neighbours, cannot agree on the location or function of a tree.

What do we do?

  • We assess the damage done to trees;
  • We conduct hazard assessment (determining whether trees or part of trees may damage property); and
  • We determine the replacement value of trees.
