SA Horticultural College combines more than 50 years of experience in gardening and horticultural education, and training in a range of specialised areas.

Our aim is to provide a firm foundation in the art and science of garden design and maintenance.

Nationally recognised training:

All courses are offered in accordance with the SAQA approved unit standards ensuring that you gain skills that are up to date and meet industry requirements.  Statement of results issued by the college are recognised nationally. 

The college offers a range of training options whether you are:

  • a student intent on undertaking a traineeship or an alternative pathway to entering a university or;
  • individuals planning to obtain formal recognition of their skills;
  • individuals who want to learn new gardening and horticultural skills.

The college offers a balance of theoretical studies with practical hands-on training. We offer a unique learning experience that will lead up to a NQF 4 level of qualification.

The qualification includes modular instruction in a range of core Horticultural practices.  A student can select modular components of the programme, or complete the full qualification, providing 120 credits of instruction. 

Areas of study include:

  • Basic Landscape Design and Installation
  • Basic Irrigation Design and Installation
  • Installation and Maintenance of Lawns
  • Soil Properties and Fertility
  • Organic Gardening
  • Pest and Weed Control
  • Horticulture Mechanization 

Together with the study of the principles and practice of design, construction and maintenance, the course addresses the business of the garden designer and includes business administration, project management, and health and safety procedures.

Project and design work form an integral part of the course and a design and management portfolio is compiled over the year of study.

The courses are developed with the green industry in mind, with input from employers and industry.
